State approves air permit for coal gasification plant
Associated Press - January 26, 2008 5:04 PM ET
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - State environmental regulators have approved an air permit for a $2 billion power plant that Duke Energy says could become the nation's first large scale project to use coal gasification technology.
Yesterday's decision to grant the permit clears the way for construction on the southwestern Indiana plant to begin, despite opponents' regulatory appeals. The 630-megawatt plant will be built along White River near Edwardsport, about 15 miles northeast of Vincennes.
Duke says the plant, which is set to open in 2012, would be 1 of the cleanest coal-fired power plants in the world.
Opponents have argued that the plant might cost much more than its advertised $2 billion if Congress were to pass strict regulations on carbon dioxide emissions linked to global warming
This project should be out of Local 157 in Terre Haute, In.
If weather is favorable it will start this spring. The halls number is 812-877-1531,
and jobline is 1-877-967-5157.
This project should employ over 1000 craftpersons at peak.
