What the hay is a URL?.......... Really Abbreviation for Uniform Resource Locator, the global address of documents and other resources on the World Wide Web. The first part of the address indicates what protocol to use, and the second part specifies the IP address or the domain name where the resource is located. For example, the two URLs below point to two different files at the same domain. The first specifies an executable file that should be fetched using the FTP protocol; the second specifies a Web Page that should be fetched using the HTTP protocol. So, in surfing the web, a URL is the proper address for whatever web page or document your dealing with. Note 1: When you type in an www.name address into a search engine, if you also type in the http:// in front of it, most will take you directly to to that address. When you just type in the www.name address you deal with listings or links the search engine companies like Yahoo, Google, MSN, and AOL want you to check out first. It's just the fastest way to get to the address, your trying to get to, is all. Note 2: Partly due to the growth of the internet, there is a effort being made to eliminate the www in URL addresses. You will see websites start dropping the www more and more in the future. However, we still use www. in front of all our URLs.
